CONCEPT, CREATIVE DIRECTION & GRAPHIC DESIGN

dog dykes is a collaborative zine & photo-essay that aims to queer the history of man’s best friend.

The collaborative publication is a photo-essay which follows aims to give voice and value to the weight of these relationships beyond that of dog as accessory. Through this publication, we hope to rewrite the limited narrative of man as 'owner' and his subordinate 'best friend,' to honor the magnitude of this interspecies friendship, cast in a queer light.

Thank you to all the LGBTQIA+ individuals (and their dogs) who have elected to be part of this project via online submission.

 THE PROJECT

Created through an open-call submission shared on social media, this project is the collective artifact of the LGBTQIA+ people (and their dogs) who elected to be part of this project via online submission to: www.dogdykes.co and in doing so, help to create queer space in the pages of this publication and hopefully in dog parks, and beyond.

The design feels warm and intimate – almost like a family scrapbook.  We wanted to reflect the process of receiving the photos and stories via the submission form and how suprising it was for us.

I had found a cursive Olivetti typewriter shopping at the Rose Bowl flea market and it blew my mind. As this project began it became clear the typewriter would feature promanently.
